Triple degree summer temperatures are not at all unusual in Scottsdale, Arizona. Unless you have ice water running through your veins, on those really hot days when you venture out of your air-conditioned space, you feel like you are slowly getting cooked in an oven. Dry heat or wet heat does not really matter. When the thermometer reads 105 degrees Fahrenheit, it is hot!
Finding a sanctuary where the temperature stays a steady 53 degrees inside when the temperatures outside are twice as high, is not some kind of wild fantasy. You can escape the hot summer weather in Scottsdale and enjoy hours of family fun at the fabulous Ice Den.
Located in north Scottsdale at 9375 E. Bell Road, the Ice Den is a beautiful 150,000 square foot ice-skating and entertainment center that also acts as the practice facility for the National Hockey League’s Phoenix Coyotes. The facility is open to the public every day of the week. Hours are 8am to 8pm with the exception of Friday, when the Ice Den stays open to 9pm. In addition to being the best place to go ice-skating, there are three restaurants, a fitness center and a lady’s clothing and accessories shop (Divalicious). http://www.coyotesice.com/public-skating
Skaters of all skill levels are welcome. There are two ice rinks and convenient public sessions are scheduled each and every day. If you should come on a Friday night, a live DJ will be on hand to play some great tunes and you can even make a request to hear your favorite song. Saturday nights are family nights. Special kid’s music will delight your young ones and the festive atmosphere makes it a fun night out for the entire family.
If you are staying with us at the Scottsdale Thunderbird Suites, you are just a short distance away from the Ice Den. Although you will probably want to spend time enjoying the cool and refreshing waters of our outdoor pool, it is nice to get away for a few hours and cool off in one of the coolest places in town.
You don’t have to be able to skate like Scott Hamilton or Katerina Witt to have a great time at the Ice Den. If you fall on your butt a few times, pick yourself up and try again. By the time your two hours of ice-time are up, you’ll be skating like you have been doing it for years. Just remember. It gets pretty cold when you are out on the ice so make sure you dress appropriately.
If you get hungry or just want a drink and a snack you can pick from any of the three eateries inside the Ice Den.
• Over Easy is a breakfast diner that serves hot coffee and fantastic breakfast fare.
• 18 Degrees Neighborhood Grill serves up lunch and dinner favorites.
• Chilly Bean Café offers popcorn, cold drinks, burritos, hot dogs and more.
When you want a break from the steaming hot summer weather in Scottsdale, you can’t beat a day at the Ice Den. You’re guaranteed to stay cool and have plenty of fun. Ask anyone.
