Sunday A’Fair: A Mini Music Festival in Scottsdale

January through March is often a dull time of year, but that doesn’t mean you have to sit home and stare at the walls. If you’re in the Scottsdale area, you can enjoy a free outdoor concert most Sundays from January to April. The event is called Sunday A’Fair, and it’s essentially a mini-festival of music, food and crafts that takes place in Scottsdale’s beautiful Civic Center Park.

Listen to the Best Music in the Valley

Sponsored by the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, this festival is loaded with talent. Some of the finest local musicians perform, and many are emerging artists heading for certain fame. This is your chance to experience a multitude of music styles, from pop and rock to jazz and blues. Concerts begin at noon, and the event runs until 4 p.m., so you can really make a day of it.

The festival is more than just a concert; it’s also an arts-and-crafts market. While enjoying live entertainment, you can stroll the gorgeous grounds and visit skilled vendors offering their unique creations. You’ll find many one-of-a-kind treasures that you can give as gifts or save as keepsakes for yourself. From photography to ceramic sculptures, there is a little something for everyone.

Make it a Family Occasion

Sunday A’Fair is perfect for family outings, and there are many exciting activities for little ones. You can even bring your pets as long as they’re leashed. Picnicking is a must, especially if you plan to spend the entire afternoon at the park. You can bring your own drinks and snacks, but scrumptious, grilled goodies and delicious cocktails are also sold at the event.

To top off your Sunday family adventure, you may want to head to the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Arts. It’s free to the public from 12-5 p.m. on festival days. During specific hours, a docent leads informative tours through the museum as well as the park. Your children won’t even realize they’re learning as they become completely immersed in the artistic culture.

Become Educated Through Entertainment

On certain Sundays, the event hosts educational talks, cultural celebrations and discussions. One notable highlight is the Peace and Community Day held Jan. 15, which honors Martin Luther King’s legacy. Before the concerts begin that day, you can listen to a holocaust survivor speak about tolerance and unity. There are also several celebrations of specific cultures throughout the months of the festival, including a special Native American tribute.

Sunday A’Fair is a gathering of gifted artists in a beautiful setting. These mini-festivals bring exposure to a lot of talent, so you could even discover your next musical obsession. Can you think of a better way to end your weekend and prepare for the week ahead? Bring along your family, friends and children, and return as many times as you like. This affair is one you’ll surely want to experience over and over.
