Scottsdale Celebrates Cinco de Mayo

The Best Mexican Pride Festivities

Cinco de Mayo is a beloved holiday in Arizona. The 5th of May commemorates the Battle of Puebla, but it’s also a day honoring the determination of the Mexican people. The Scottsdale area becomes a party zone this time of year, so you’ll find plenty of opportunities to celebrate. From festivals and parades to dining and drinking specials, there is something for everyone.

Cinco de Mayo at SumoMaya

Scottsdale’s Mexican-Asian fusion restaurant is a great place to kick things off. With its all-day happy hour prices on drinks and the mouth-watering Tapas-style dishes, you cannot go wrong. The doors open at 11 a.m. on the 5th, so you can make a day of it if you’re feeling a good vibe. There will even be a DJ spinning tracks all night.

El Hefe

This festive taqueria is sure to put you in wild mood. The restaurant transforms into party central the week leading up to Cinco de Mayo. Beer-garitas and other signature drinks are just the beginning. Block parties, piñatas, club dancing, house DJs and beanbag tournaments are some of the festivities you can look forward to. You might even get a photo op with a sombrero-wearing donkey.

Sprinkles and Old Town Gringos

If you’d rather celebrate in a more subtle way, you have a couple great options. Old Town Gringos is a two-story restaurant with an amazing outdoor patio bar. This Scottsdale hot spot hosts a three-day celebration that includes chili pepper eating contests, tequila-flavored popsicles and live music. For dessert, head to Sprinkles where you can enjoy a delicious margarita cupcake.

Cinco de Mayo Phoenix Festival

Although this annual multicultural celebration takes place in downtown Phoenix, it’s a favorite of Scottsdale residents. Throughout the two-day festival, there will be live entertainment, cultural dance performances, parades, carnival games and rides, and traditional street foods. This is a perfectly family friendly event, and there are special activities lined up for kids of all ages.

The Cinco de Mayo celebrations in and around Scottsdale don’t just take place on the actual holiday; many businesses start the merriment the week before. Best Western Plus Scottsdale Thunderbird Suites has plenty of beautiful rooms available in case you want to take advantage of the multi-day revelry. No matter how you choose to salute Mexican heritage, you’ll have a comfortable place to recuperate.
